Loomer
limped into existence back in the spring of 99 with little fanfare and
even fewer expectations. Born out of the ashes of Toronto alt country
stalwarts The Saddletramps, and built around the idiosyncratic song
writing skills of Scott Loomer, they released their internationally
acclaimed debut album Love is a Dull Instrument in the summer of 2004.
This
is one of those "where did these guys come from?" records that - once
you hear it - commands serious attention All wrapped up with a bent
sense of humour and a hint of that typically Canadian self-deprecating
way, Loomer begs an audience, if not a following.

Eerder dit jaar waren deze Canadezen al succesvol voor enige optredens in Nederland. Luke Doucet met labelgenoten (Six Shooter) NQ Arbuckle en Justin Rutledge, en Suzie Ungerleider aka Oh Susanna met gitarist Steve Dawson. In het voorjaar komen Suzie en Luke samen met band terug naar Europa.

Luke Doucet - Take Root Live recensie - Oktober 2007
Het was evenwel de Canadees Luke Doucet die zich tot de grote smaakmaker van het festival ontpopte. Hij deelde het podium gebroederlijk met zijn land- en labelgenoten Justin Rutledge en NQ Arbuckle. Bij Doucet viel alles even samen, een mix van jeugdig bravoure, spelplezier, innemende presentatie en prima songs.

It opens with a sweet, joyous love song, beautifully sung, folky, with judicious use of strings - a warm, full mood that the Canadian singer-songwriter returns to a few more times on her fine fourth album. Flitting between spectral folk and downbeat blues, 2003's eponymous last LP earned Oh Susanna several rave notices over here. This time around, Suzie Ungerleider's intention was to make more of a "band" record. But the pianos, steel and strings are so artfully understated that she sounds as lost and wind-bitten as before. There's a Southern soul feel to much of this lovely music, particularly "Schoolyard" and clear standout "Greyhound Bus". And while there are hints of Appalachia, the other gilded moment is "Holly Roller", a spare, folksy beauty set to equally lonesome piano. UNCUT

Canadian home-grown artist Royal Wood (duo) will be touring Europe February / March 2008.
Beginning on the piano at the age of four, Royal became a multi-instrumentalist by his early teens. His new album, A Good Enough Day will be released before the tour.
